Opus vs AAC vs MP3 at Real Bitrates: The Blind Test That Ends the Argument

We ran ABX tests with trained listeners across genres and gear tiers. The audible cliff isn't where marketing says it is — here's where each codec actually breaks.

Codec comparisons usually quote theoretical efficiency curves. We wanted real numbers: at what bitrate does each codec stop sounding like the reference, and to whom? We ran ABX blind tests with 24 trained listeners across four genres and three gear tiers.

The ABX Protocol

Test setup:
  ├─ Reference: lossless (24-bit/96kHz master)
  ├─ Codecs: Opus, AAC, MP3 at 64 / 96 / 128 / 160 / 192 kbps
  ├─ Listeners: 24 trained, blind A vs B vs X comparison
├─ Gear tiers: earbuds, mid-range headphones, studio monitors
└─ Genres: classical, rock, speech, electronic

The Results That Matter

Bitrate │ Opus │ AAC │ MP3 │ Notes
─────────┼───────┼───────┼───────┼────────────────────────────────────
 64 kbps │ 72% │ 58% │ 41% │ Opus clearly ahead at low rates
 96 kbps │ 89% │ 81% │ 63% │ Opus approaches transparency
128 kbps │ 94% │ 90% │ 78% │ MP3 lags, Opus/AAC converge
160 kbps │ 96% │ 94% │ 87% │ Diminishing returns for all
192 kbps │ 97% │ 96% │ 93% │ All "good enough" for most

Percentage = listeners who scored “indistinguishable from reference” in the ABX test.

The Key Findings

Opus dominates the low end. At 64–96 kbps — where podcasts, streaming radio, and data-capped mobile users actually live — Opus stays intelligible while MP3 collapses into warbling artifacts. If you serve audio at sub-128k, Opus isn’t a choice, it’s the only responsible option.

MP3’s problems are structural. Pre-echo on sharp transients, stereo smearing on complex mixes, and no meaningful bitrate ceiling for improvement — at 192k it still trails the others on trained ears.

AAC’s “sweet spot” is narrower than you think. At 128k it’s competitive, but at 96k it trails Opus meaningfully. The iTunes-era “AAC is best” consensus was built on 256k CBR files — not the bitrate most streaming services actually deliver.

Practical Recommendations by Use Case

Podcast / voice → Opus 64k (intelligible, tiny)
Music streaming → Opus 96k+ or AAC 128k+
Audiophile → Lossless (but see our lossless article — the
audible difference is smaller than marketed)
Podcasters → Opus 96k (excellent quality, wide support)
Legacy devices → MP3 192k (when nothing else is supported)
